Voice Lessons

Transformational Voice Training offers voice lessons at the Portland, Oregon studio. The technique Linda teaches is based on what she calls the four pillars of good vocalism:

  1. Breathing: Considered the foundation of the art, enabling your voice to be free and your body to let go of extraneous body tension.
  2. Resonance Also called “singing in the mask” or "forward focus", which is a feeling of buzziness or resonance on the front of the face. Though this can initially sound ugly to the singer themselves because our ears lie to us, focus enables a more efficient use of the breath, makes diction much clearer, helps to eliminate breaks, and generally unifies and stabilizes the voice.
  3. Registers: Similar to gears in a car. Registers work along with focus to show you where in your body to “aim” your voice, or where you will feel the resonance in your body throughout your range. For instance, as you go higher, you will “feel” the buzz ascend in your head. Many singers think they can’t sing high because they aren’t aware of their registers. Registers should smoothly connect to each other with no breaks.
  4. Diction and Language: Singers are called upon to pronounce words properly in a variety of languages. You will learn to use vowels to propel your voice.

Your first voice lesson

Your first voice lesson will be an evaluation of where you are in the process of freeing your voice and a discussion of where it is you want to go with your voice. We'll talk about your mission (what do want to achieve) and how can I help you. Singers come to Transformational Voice Training for a variety of reasons including: voice type identification, artistic growth, solidifying technique, and customized work on speaking. During this initial consultation I will want to hear you vocalize or sing a piece of music. At that time I'll provide feedback as to what it is I can offer you to enable you to reach your goals faster and easier.
